Although the landscape of Acadia National Park may not be as extreme as some of the National Parks out west, it’s one of the most visited National Parks and has some breathtaking areas. Additionally, it’s a great destination if you only have a short amount of time.
Another reason to go to Acadia is that it changes with the seasons. For example, if you go in the Fall you can expect striking fall foliage (best from late September to mid October)and the perfect weather to cozy up in Acadia National Park’s neighboring town of Bar Harbour with a bowl of chowder.Below I’ve laid out my favorite parts of Acadia National Park and the surrounding area!
1) Hike in the Morning or at Sunset
Although hiking in Acadia National Park at any time of day is lovely, hiking in the morning or at sunset is going to get you the best views and photos. As sunrise times change, be sure to check when you go so you can leave enough time for a sunrise or catch sunset.
2) Go Camping
Whenever I go to Acadia National Park, I camp. If you go in Fall there may be some rain, but the weather for camping is otherwise great. I especially like the Mount Desert Campground because of the aesthetically pleasing views of the water through the pine trees.
Be sure to book ahead, and if it’s first come, first serve arrive early to pick a site because camping in Acadia National Park is popular.
3) Leave Enough Time for Jordan Pond
Jordan Pond is really more of a lake and it’s one of my favorite places in Acadia National Park! Two things I recommend doing in this area are 1) The Jordan Pond Shore Trail that goes around the pond and 2) Eat at Jordan Pond House. Firstly, the trail around the lake is scenic and low-difficulty.
Secondly, Jordan Pond is also home to Jordan Pond House which is a very popular restaurant that often has a long wait. However, because of its beautiful lakeside location and famous popover treats (that really become the foam on top when accompanied by the butter and jam) I think it’s a must for your visit!
I will warn that if you sit outside at Jordan Pond House when it’s warm out, my experience was during September, the bees may be a nuisance. Alternatively, on an October trip, I sat inside, but the doors were open to the outside and it was very cold. So, perhaps opt for inside in the warmer months and bundle up in the cooler months!
This restaurant normally has at least an hour wait, and I have waited up to two hours so, you may want to get on the waiting list and then go explore the lake and or take pictures.
4) Enjoy the Maine Lighthouse Vibes
Maine has many beautiful lighthouses, but this is one of my favorites near Acadia National Park! You have to take a short walk down to the rocky shoreline to get this view, but I would recommend it.
5) Drive to the Top of Cadillac Mountain at Sunset
Cadillac Mountain is normally very busy at sunrise. It’s often so busy that they eventually close off the road to the top because the parking lot is at capacity! So, consider going later in the day. I’ve had more luck getting a parking spot later in the day and still really enjoyed the views.
6) Hike the Beehive Trail
The Beehive Trail is a perfect hike on a calm day for those who are looking for great views and a bit of thrill. It’s a 1.5 mile loop and, while it may not be the most challenging hike in Acadia, it’s got a few areas where you must rely on iron rungs. Additionally, on windy or stormy days it becomes considerably more challenging.
Personally, I wouldn’t do this hike with young children or those who are afraid of heights. However, it’s definitely a staple when we go!
