This is a collection of my favorite things to do in Copenhagen, Denmark as a summer study abroad student in 2018.
1. Visit Nyhavn
Although this is one of the more touristy areas in Copenhagen, it was still one of my favorite places to go. We would often just grab a beer at sunset and sit on the docks.
2. Swim at Islands Brygge
You might have heard that Copenhagen has clean water. Well it’s true, and you can swim in some areas. We liked to go to Islands Brygge to do so. Sometimes we would go to just layout on the wooden docks and talk. Other times we would stop by Flying Tiger (the Danish Target) to buy inflatable tubes and then float around!
3. Enjoy a Picnic at Kongens Have
Kongens Have, translated to English is the “King’s Garden“. This is a very popular picnic destination so you can grab a blanket, some bread and cheese, maybe some wine, and join the people of Copenhagen as they enjoy their outdoor spaces. If you visit definitely walk over to the Rosenborg Slot (Castle)!
4. Book a Canal Tour or Rent a GoBoat
From beautiful bridges to interesting architecture, Copenhagen by boat has a lot to offer. Either a canal boat tour or GoBoat rental is a must. Canal guided tours are nice because they give history and information. Alternatively, if you have a small group and are looking to have a more chill time with snacks then I would recommend renting a boat and bringing along your favorite snacks to meander through the canals on your own.
Lastly, keep in mind that if you do rent GoBoats someone in your boat will have to drive the boat. We did not have much experience, so it’s definitely possible for beginners!
5. Carlsberg Brewery Tour
Carlsberg Group established in 1847 is a Danish brewer, best known for its pilsner. We did a tour and tasting at the brewery which was informative and fun! If you are a beer drinker this may be an ideal stop on your trip.
6. Stroll on Strøget
This is a popular pedestrian shopping area. If you have extra time and enjoy shopping, I would take a stroll here and see what the stores have to offer.
7. Visit the Kunsthal Charlottenborg Exhibition Building
There is often something exciting going on in this building as it is the exhibition gallery of the Royal Danish Academy of Art. We saw many unique exhibits when we went. If you are looking for something off the beaten path, you may want to see if an exhibition will be going on while you are in Copenhagen! See the site for events.
8. Indulge in the Aesthetic Food
Copenhagen has many unique food choices. Keep in mind that many of the restaurants are rather pricey so if you are on a budget, you may want to stick to buying smaller items here and there to experience different things and avoid the expensive restaurants.
If you are very interested in food you can read my Copenhagen Budget Eats blog. If you have a sweet tooth, then you should check out Skt. Peders Bageri, which is not on that list, but is home to many mouth-watering treats such as the rolls pictured above.
9.Explore Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli is a beautiful place, especially in the evening when the lights are more visible. The gardens themselves are worth seeing, but you can also pay extra for amusement park rides if those interest you. Check out the Tivoli site.
